Tuko Kadi slogan turns heat on Ruto

A political slogan born in Kenya’s digital spaces has rapidly morphed into a rallying cry against President William Ruto, with sections of its supporters now openly declaring that “Tuko Kadi” signals a one-term presidency.

What began as a youth-driven call for civic engagement and voter registration has taken on sharper political undertones, as activists and opposition figures reinterpret the phrase to mean that the President’s “card is red” — a metaphor for electoral rejection.

The shift became more pronounced after Dr Ruto sought to appropriate the slogan, declaring “Hata sisi tuko kadi,” a move that critics argue diluted its original intent. Instead, opponents have flipped the phrase into a warning that his time in office will be cut short at the ballot.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been among those amplifying the counter-narrative, telling supporters at recent rallies that the President’s “kadi” is, in fact, a “red card.” The remark has since been widely shared online, feeding into a growing chorus framing the slogan as a referendum on Dr Ruto’s leadership.

At the centre of the movement are young Kenyans, many of whom have embraced “Tuko Kadi” as both a statement of readiness and a declaration of political intent ahead of the next election.

In a statement following a visit to Karatina, Mr Gachagua praised what he described as a rising generation determined to shape the country’s future through the ballot.

“The young people of Kenya are a vibrant and dynamic force in decision-making and remain incorruptible. Their energy and innovations are unmatched as they actively participate in shaping the future of their nation,” he said.

He added that, alongside his spouse Rev. Dorcas and their sons Kevin and Keith, he joined hundreds of Gen Zs at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission offices in Karatina, where they had gathered to register as voters through the “Niko Kadi” initiative.

“We took the opportunity to verify our details with the officers of the commission. I am genuinely encouraged by the young people's efforts to mobilize themselves for this noble cause of mass voter registration,” he said.

Mr Gachagua framed the initiative as a pathway for political change, urging young Kenyans to use their numbers at the ballot.

“This will ensure they exercise their democratic right to vote out rogue and unapologetic destroyers of our economy and their future, and to elect responsible leaders. I call on young people across the country to rise to this challenge and register en masse. Let’s make a powerful statement on the ballot next year and shape a better Kenya for all,” he said.

The slogan’s evolution reflects a broader political contest over narrative and symbolism as the 2027 General Election begins to take shape. While the President’s allies present “Tuko Kadi” as a sign of preparedness and confidence, critics insist it has become shorthand for public dissatisfaction and a desire for change.

For now, “Tuko Kadi” remains fluid, claimed by both sides but increasingly defined by its critics as a call to send Dr Ruto home after one term.
