Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna has accused allies of President William Ruto of attempting to remove him from a high-profile ODM gathering in Mombasa, an event that highlights the growing political tension within Kenya’s opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking to reporters, Sifuna said forces aligned with the Kenya Kwanza administration plotted to replace him during ODM’s 20th-anniversary forum. “I know they want me out, but I will not back Ruto,” he said, framing the alleged move as part of a broader strategy to silence dissenting voices within his party.
The incident comes at a time when ODM, under Secretary-General Sifuna’s oversight, is navigating a delicate relationship with the ruling UDA party. While some senior ODM leaders have embraced collaboration with President Ruto’s administration, Sifuna has positioned himself as a vocal critic of any formal alignment.
In earlier remarks at a fundraising event in Trans Nzoia, Sifuna warned that he would refuse to support ODM should the party endorse Ruto in 2027, signaling a potential fracture within the opposition ranks. The Senator has since launched a youth-led political initiative, “Kenya Moja,” aligning with other opposition figures seeking to challenge the government and push back against what he describes as “failed leadership.”
