Ruto unveils Nyeri projects in Gachagua’s home turf

"This includes the completion of the Kenol-Karatina-Marua dual carriageway and other road projects, the construction of 8,000 affordable housing units, 20 modern markets and hostels for university and college students, and the upgrade of Ruring’u Stadium."

President William Ruto has announced an accelerated infrastructure programme in Nyeri County, rolling out a series of road, housing, market and public facility projects in what now carries clear political undertones in the heart of Mt Kenya.

The announcement, made after a meeting at State House, Nairobi, includes the fast-tracking of the Kenol–Karatina–Marua dual carriageway, construction of 8,000 affordable housing units, development of 20 modern markets, student hostels, and the upgrade of Ruring’u Stadium.

“We are transforming the face of Nyeri County through ambitious infrastructure development,” Ruto said. “We agreed to fast-track these projects so that we can conclusively expand opportunities, strengthen local enterprise, and lift the livelihoods of the people of Nyeri.”

The projects land squarely in Nyeri — the political home turf of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua — turning what is officially a development announcement into a new chapter in the evolving power struggle within the Mt Kenya region.

Gachagua, who was impeached in 2024 and has since repositioned himself as one of the most vocal critics of the Kenya Kwanza administration, has used public rallies and media appearances to accuse the government of betraying Mt Kenya interests and failing to honour campaign promises made in 2022.

He has repeatedly argued that the region is being sidelined in key economic decisions, claiming that development is being “selectively distributed” and used as a political tool rather than a national planning priority.

In recent remarks, Gachagua has also accused the administration of presiding over worsening economic conditions, including rising cost of living and strain on households, saying the government has lost touch with ordinary citizens.

He has further maintained that his impeachment was politically engineered to weaken his influence in Mt Kenya politics and silence dissent within the ruling coalition.

The Nyeri announcement is therefore likely to be viewed through this tense political lens, where infrastructure delivery and regional loyalty are increasingly intertwined.

The Kenol–Karatina–Marua dual carriageway remains one of the flagship transport corridors in central Kenya, expected to ease congestion and strengthen trade between key towns in the region.

The affordable housing programme, modern markets and student accommodation projects form part of a broader national development agenda, but Nyeri’s political symbolism — as Gachagua’s base — gives them added weight.

Political observers say the latest push reflects a broader strategy by the Ruto administration to reinforce its presence in Mt Kenya through visible projects, even as internal political fault lines continue to widen in the region.
