Siaya Governor James Orengo has taken over as lead counsel in the case involving the alleged assault of Senator Godfrey Osotsi, as political leaders rally behind the lawmaker following the incident in Kisumu.
Orengo said he had formally assumed the role to coordinate legal action and ensure accountability for those behind the attack.
“I have taken the role of lead counsel for my colleague, Principal Sen. Godfrey Osotsi, regarding the recent assault in Kisumu. Today, we joined him at the Bunge Police Station in Nairobi to formally document his statement,” Orengo said.
He added that the legal team, which also includes Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, is committed to pursuing those behind the attack.
“Alongside my learned friends Edwin Sifuna and Babu Owino, we are dedicated to pursuing full accountability for both the attackers and their sponsors. Justice will not be deterred by violence,” he said.
The leaders visited Bunge Police Station in Nairobi where Senator Osotsi recorded a formal statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the assault. Police have opened investigations into the incident, which has sparked political condemnation and renewed concerns over the safety of elected leaders during public engagements.
Osotsi, the Vihiga Senator, was attacked during an engagement in Kisumu, an incident that has drawn reactions from across the political divide. Authorities have not yet confirmed arrests or identified suspects as investigations continue.
The matter has triggered wider political debate, with leaders calling for expedited investigations and stronger protection for public officials during public participation forums, especially in politically tense regions.
Orengo’s involvement adds weight to the legal push, given his long-standing experience as a veteran lawyer and senior political figure. His decision to lead the case has been seen by allies as a sign that the matter will be pursued with both legal and political urgency.
Osotsi is expected to continue cooperating with investigators as police gather statements from witnesses and review available evidence linked to the incident.
