Leaders allied to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) on Monday broke ground for the Raila Odinga Hospital in Kongowea, Nyali, in a ceremony that doubled as a tribute to the late Raila Odinga.
The project, hosted by Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, will upgrade Kongowea Health Centre into a modern medical facility expected to serve residents in Mombasa and the wider coastal region.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga said the hospital reflects Odinga’s long-standing push for equitable healthcare.
“In memory of Raila Odinga, a true champion of healthcare and dignity for all Kenyans, we are laying the foundation for a facility that reflects his vision,” Wanga said.
Kisii Governor Simba Arati joined other ODM leaders at the event, which they said underscores the party’s commitment to universal healthcare.
Odinga died on October 15, 2025, in India, where he had travelled for specialised treatment. Reports indicate he collapsed during a morning walk and suffered cardiac arrest.
His body was flown back to Kenya and he was later buried at his home in Bondo, Siaya County, following a state funeral that drew thousands of mourners.
Governor Nassir said the new hospital would stand as a lasting tribute to Odinga’s legacy.
“This is a commitment to ensure quality healthcare is accessible to all,” he said.
Leaders said the facility will help ease pressure on existing hospitals in Mombasa once complete.
