Siaya Governor James Orengo has announced that the Linda Mwananchi caravan will head to Meru, as opposition mobilisation gathers pace ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a statement, Orengo said the team was preparing for the next phase of engagements following consultations with Godfrey Osotsi and former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
“The Linda Mwananchi caravan is Meru bound! After a productive session with Senator Godfrey Osotsi and former Governor Kawira Mwangaza today, we are preparing to hit the ground. Date announcement coming soon,” he said, adding the rallying call “Mambo ni WANTAM!”
The planned tour underscores growing efforts by a section of opposition leaders to consolidate support in the Mount Kenya region, amid shifting political alignments.
The Linda Mwananchi (Protect the Citizen) movement emerged in recent months as a loose coalition of leaders, largely associated with the Orange Democratic Movement, who have been critical of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s economic policies.
The faction has framed its agenda around what it describes as defending ordinary Kenyans from high taxation, rising cost of living and shrinking incomes, positioning itself as a grassroots-driven pressure group rather than a formal political outfit.
Leaders allied to the movement have been holding consultative meetings and public forums across the country, seeking to build a broad-based platform that could influence the opposition’s direction heading into 2027.
ODM factions emerge
The rise of Linda Mwananchi has also exposed simmering divisions within ODM, Kenya’s main opposition party led by Raila Odinga.
One faction, in which Orengo is seen as a key voice, has taken a more hardline stance against the government, pushing for sustained political pressure and grassroots mobilisation under banners such as Linda Mwananchi.
Another wing within ODM has adopted a more conciliatory approach, backing dialogue and structured engagement with President William Samoei Ruto’s administration, particularly following bipartisan talks and cooperation agreements witnessed in recent months.
These differences have not led to a formal split but have created parallel centres of influence within the party, with leaders charting distinct political strategies.
Political mobilisation
Orengo’s Meru announcement signals an escalation of grassroots activity by the Linda Mwananchi group, with the inclusion of leaders such as Ms Mwangaza seen as a strategy to penetrate regions that have traditionally leaned towards the ruling coalition.
The “Wantam” slogan, increasingly used by leaders allied to the faction, reflects calls for a one-term presidency, adding a sharper political edge to the movement’s messaging.
