Siaya Governor James Orengo has launched a sharp attack on the government, warning that the country is entering a decisive political moment that demands “truth to power” and an end to what he described as complacency among leaders.
In a strongly worded statement, Orengo took issue with recent remarks by President William Ruto, accusing him of intolerance toward dissent. “The ground is shifting and the time for business as usual is over,” Orengo said, adding that comments about sending critics “home” signaled “a chilling disregard for democratic dissent.”
The governor also raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding opposition leader Raila Odinga, calling for a “full and transparent investigation” into matters he said could not be ignored. He did not specify the exact issues but insisted accountability was necessary to maintain public trust.
Orengo’s remarks come amid growing political realignments within the opposition, particularly around the emerging “Linda Mwananchi” movement, which he urged supporters to embrace. He praised Kisumu politician Ruth Odinga and Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo for what he termed as courage in speaking out, urging others not to be intimidated by those in power.
“It is a bitter irony to see local leaders endorsing outside candidates for the Deputy Presidency while overlooking the undisputed presidential material within Luo Nyanza,” Orengo said, in remarks likely to fuel debate over succession politics ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The governor revealed that the movement’s next political rally will be held in Meru County, with a planned follow-up gathering in Siaya County, signaling an attempt to expand its influence beyond its traditional support base.
Earlier in the day, Orengo joined mourners in Ndori, East Asembo, where he paid tribute to businessman Sylvester Akumu Otieno, describing him as “an epitome of kindness” and a respected community figure.
His latest remarks underline deepening tensions within Kenya’s political landscape, as factions within the opposition recalibrate strategy and positioning in the run-up to the next election cycle.
