Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has intensified his criticism of President William Ruto’s administration, accusing the government of deceiving Kenyans with non-existent projects and unfulfilled promises.

Speaking at Ng’araria shopping centre in Kandara Constituency, Murang’a County, Gachagua claimed the Kenya Kwanza administration had failed to deliver meaningful development despite making numerous promises to wananchi.

“They have promised us projects that do not exist. They have sold us illusions and empty promises,” Gachagua said.

“Without flinching, they now boast of projects in neighboring countries—projects they themselves have no real knowledge or clarity about. Uongo umevuka border.”

The former deputy president said Kenyans had made a mistake trusting the current leadership, arguing that the administration lacked the competence to govern effectively.

“Our greatest mistake was trusting them. They have shown they lack the competence to govern effectively,” he said.

Gachagua further claimed residents of Ng’araria had expressed frustration with the government and no longer wanted leaders pursuing selfish interests at the expense of ordinary citizens.

“The people of Ng’araria shopping centre have told me that we can no longer gamble with individuals who are clueless and whose primary goal is selfish interests at the expense of Kenyans,” he said.

The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader also used the rally to position himself for the 2027 General Election, promising to work with “Kenyans of goodwill” to change the country’s direction.

“But on 10th August 2027, together with Kenyans of goodwill, we will reset the course of our nation and correct all the wrongs,” Gachagua said.

His remarks add to the growing political fallout between him and President Ruto following his impeachment in October 2024. Since then, Gachagua has emerged as one of the most vocal critics of the Kenya Kwanza administration, accusing it of economic mismanagement, overtaxation and sidelining the Mt Kenya region despite its strong support in the 2022 elections.

President Ruto, however, has consistently defended his administration during public rallies, insisting his government inherited a struggling economy burdened by debt and stalled projects. The President has argued that tough economic measures, including new taxes and austerity policies, are necessary to stabilise the country and fund development.

Ruto has repeatedly pointed to ongoing affordable housing projects, road construction, electricity connectivity and the recruitment of teachers and healthcare workers as evidence that his administration is delivering on its promises. He has also maintained that Kenya’s economy is gradually recovering, citing a stronger shilling, falling inflation and increased agricultural production.

At several rallies, the President has dismissed critics as leaders opposed to reforms and accused some politicians of engaging in early campaigns instead of supporting government programmes.

The political rivalry between Ruto and Gachagua is expected to shape the country’s political landscape as leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 polls.
