The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has intensified preparations for the Ol-Kalou Constituency parliamentary by-election scheduled for 16 July 2026, convening a planning meeting to align operational readiness ahead of the poll.
The meeting brought together election officials to review logistics, timelines, budgeting and key procedures required to ensure a smooth electoral exercise.
Speaking during the session, Commissioner Ann Nderitu underscored critical areas that the Commission says will guide the conduct of the by-election, including data protection, regulation of photography within polling stations, access control at polling centres and professional conduct of election officials.
The Commission said these measures are aimed at strengthening electoral integrity and safeguarding voter privacy while ensuring orderly management of polling day activities.
Officials also used the forum to reflect on lessons drawn from previous elections, identifying recurring challenges and emerging risks that could affect the credibility of the by-election.
The discussions focused on developing mitigation strategies to address operational gaps, with an emphasis on improving efficiency in voter identification, results transmission and overall polling station management.
Participants further reviewed key milestones in the electoral calendar, including training schedules, deployment plans, budget allocations and coordination mechanisms between constituency and national election offices.
The Commission said the planning process is part of its broader effort to ensure that all by-elections are conducted in line with constitutional requirements for free, fair and credible polls.
IEBC officials stressed that early preparation remains central to avoiding last-minute logistical challenges that have previously affected electoral exercises.
The Ol-Kalou by-election will be among the key tests for the Commission as it continues to refine its operational systems ahead of the 2027 General Election cycle.
