Speaking during an interview with a local station on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Gachoka said Sifuna needed to establish a strong national political movement and demonstrate his leadership capacity before entering into possible coalition arrangements.
Gachoka argued that Sifuna’s political strength was rooted in the support he was attracting from Kenyans rather than established party structures or his association with prominent opposition figures.
Gachoka Urges Sifuna to Court More Opposition Leaders
The KANU politician said Sifuna should reach out to leaders from different political parties and regions to expand the influence of the Linda Mwananchi Movement and build a broader national support base.
He cited KANU chairman Gideon Moi, Kisii politician Richard Onyonka and Machakos leader Makau among the figures whose engagement could help Sifuna strengthen his political network. Gachoka also referenced his own position as a Nairobi gubernatorial aspirant while discussing the need for wider political cooperation.
“He should be reaching out in order to strengthen his presidential bid, not allow Gachagua to be the one dictating the tune of the national harmony,” Gachoka said.
He maintained that Sifuna had limited time to establish himself nationally before opposition parties begin serious discussions about possible coalitions and political partnerships ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to Gachoka, building relationships across the opposition should be part of Sifuna’s strategy rather than relying on a small circle of established political leaders.
Gachoka Raises Concerns Over Gachagua’s Influence
Gachoka also warned that Gachagua could emerge as the de facto leader of the opposition if Sifuna failed to expand his political influence and attract more leaders to his side.
He argued that the former deputy president's established political standing could give him considerable influence over opposition negotiations, potentially leaving other leaders with less room to shape the agenda.
The KANU aspirant further suggested that perceptions of political experience and seniority could present a challenge for Sifuna when engaging established opposition figures, including Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
Gachoka therefore urged the Nairobi senator to focus on building a national movement capable of attracting leaders from different political backgrounds before committing to alliance arrangements.
2027 Opposition Alliance Talks
The remarks come amid growing discussions about opposition unity and the possibility of a joint political front to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua, Kalonzo and Sifuna have featured prominently in conversations about possible opposition cooperation, while leaders from different parties continue to express their views on the direction such an alliance should take.
Gachoka’s comments reflect his assessment that Sifuna should establish an independent political base and engage a wider range of leaders before coalition negotiations take shape.
However, his remarks do not establish that Sifuna has adopted the proposed strategy or that any formal agreement has been reached among the opposition figures mentioned.
The question of who will lead the opposition's presidential campaign, and how the different political camps will negotiate their interests, remains a major issue as the country approaches the 2027 General Election.
