New Commander Takes Over Presidential Security
A significant leadership change has been made within the President’s protection team, with William Kiptoo Sawe assuming command of the Presidential Escort Unit (PEU).
Sawe, who previously served as Commanding Officer of the Recce Sub Unit, steps into the role immediately, taking charge of one of the most sensitive security formations in Kenya responsible for protecting the Head of State.
Outgoing Boss Redeployed in Shake-Up
The outgoing PEU commandant, Noah Kirwa Maiyo, has been moved to Kenya Police Headquarters at Vigilance House as part of broader adjustments within the police command structure.
The reshuffle also includes additional transfers and internal realignments within the Recce Unit and the Presidential Escort Unit.
Triggered by Security Breach in Kilifi
The changes follow a security incident in Ganze, Kilifi County, where an individual reportedly gained brief access to President William Ruto during a public function.
Authorities described the breach as a serious lapse in protocol, prompting urgent review and restructuring of the presidential security apparatus.
Strengthening Presidential Protection
Police leadership said the overhaul is aimed at tightening security protocols and preventing future breaches involving the Head of State.
The move underscores the government’s focus on reinforcing elite security units tasked with safeguarding national leadership during public engagements.
