Three New Laws Officially Enacted
President William Ruto on Friday presided over the eighth presidential assent ceremony of 2026, signing three major bills into law during an event held at State House, Nairobi.
The newly enacted laws include:
- The National Disaster Risk Management Bill, 2023
- The Forest Conservation and Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025
- The Equalisation Fund Appropriations Bill, 2025
Government officials described the legislation as part of broader reforms aimed at improving national preparedness, environmental sustainability, and balanced regional development.
Disaster Management Framework Expanded
According to Deputy Chief of Staff Josphat Nanok, the National Disaster Risk Management law establishes a structured national system for responding to emergencies and disasters.
The Act introduces:
- A National Disaster Risk Management Authority
- County-level disaster management committees
- Coordinated response mechanisms during emergencies
Officials say the framework is expected to improve response efficiency during floods, droughts, fires, and other national crises.
Focus on Forest Protection
The Forest Conservation amendment seeks to strengthen the protection and management of Kenya’s forests amid increasing concerns over environmental degradation and climate pressures.
Authorities say the law will support conservation initiatives while reinforcing sustainable use of forest resources.
Boost for Marginalised Regions
The Equalisation Fund Appropriations law is designed to channel resources toward underserved and historically marginalized areas.
The government says the funding will support development projects intended to reduce inequality in access to infrastructure and essential services.
