Siaya Governor James Orengo has alleged that there was an assassination plot against him during a turbulent political tour of Homa Bay County that was marred by violence, road blockades, and confrontations involving his supporters and suspected hired goons.
In a statement posted on his X account on the night of Friday, May 29, 2026, Orengo accused unnamed state operatives and political rivals of orchestrating attacks aimed at sabotaging his engagements in Mbita, Rusinga Island, and Sindo.
The veteran politician claimed the trouble began shortly after his arrival in Homa Bay County when a group of individuals allegedly attacked his convoy in Mbita. According to Orengo, the attackers smashed the windscreen of his vehicle and damaged several other vehicles traveling with his entourage.
Orengo further alleged that the attacks were part of a broader scheme to intimidate him and prevent him from addressing supporters during the tour. Despite the disruption, he said his supporters resisted the attacks, allowing planned rallies in Mbita Town and Rusinga Island to proceed.
The governor described the incidents as coordinated acts of political violence and called for investigations into those responsible. He maintained that political competition should be conducted peacefully and within the law rather than through intimidation and violence.
The claims have heightened political tensions in the region, with supporters and opponents offering differing accounts of the events. As of now, authorities have not publicly confirmed Orengo’s allegations of an assassination plot, and investigations into the reported violence are expected to shed more light on what transpired during the tour.
The incident comes at a time of increasing political activity across the country as leaders intensify grassroots engagements and position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
