Gatundu South Member of Parliament Gabriel Kagombe has warned that the opposition coalition could face significant internal challenges if former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua survives his impeachment case and becomes eligible to contest future elections.
Speaking during an exclusive interview with Kameme TV on Monday, June 8, 2026, Kagombe argued that the opposition's current unity may not withstand the political realities that could emerge after the conclusion of Gachagua's legal battle.
According to the lawmaker, many opposition leaders are currently united by a common political objective, but underlying ambitions and competition for leadership positions could trigger a major realignment once the impeachment matter is settled.
“The united opposition must be dismantled because there is no way he is seeking to be cleared to vie in order not to vie. If you look at political muscle in the opposition, you would realise there is a problem. There shall be a crisis in the united opposition, and that will make our game very easy,” Kagombe said.
The MP suggested that Gachagua's political future remains a key factor in shaping opposition dynamics ahead of the 2027 General Election. He argued that if the former deputy president is cleared by the courts, he is likely to pursue higher political ambitions, potentially creating competition with other opposition figures.
Kagombe further claimed that the opposition coalition's apparent unity is fragile and could quickly unravel regardless of how the impeachment case is resolved. He maintained that political players within the alliance are already positioning themselves for potential post-impeachment realignments.
His remarks come at a time when opposition leaders are seeking to strengthen cooperation and build a formidable alliance capable of challenging President William Ruto's administration in the next general election.
Political analysts have noted that leadership ambitions, party interests, and regional considerations will likely play a significant role in determining whether opposition unity can be sustained as the 2027 elections draw closer.
With Gachagua's impeachment case remaining one of the most closely watched political and legal developments in the country, its outcome is expected to influence future alliances, campaign strategies, and leadership contests within both the opposition and the ruling coalition.
