Former Chief Justice David Maraga has strongly criticized the wave of electoral violence witnessed across the country, calling it “unacceptable and deserving of the strongest condemnation.” Maraga noted that the violent incidents seen today and in recent weeks pose a serious threat to Kenya’s democratic stability and citizens’ safety.
He emphasized that elections must be conducted in an environment free of intimidation, brutality, and manipulation. According to him, the chaos unfolding in various by-election areas signals a worrying trend that cannot be ignored.
In his statement, Maraga expressed deep concern over what he termed increasing interference with the National Police Service and other independent bodies. He warned that politicizing the police and weakening their autonomy undermines public trust and compromises national security.
Maraga stressed that the police must remain impartial, professional, and free from political influence in order to effectively safeguard elections and uphold the rule of law.
He called on the government, security agencies, and political leaders to respect democratic norms and prioritize the safety of citizens above partisan interests.
