Former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion has backed the High Court ruling that upheld the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, maintaining that the court confirmed the process was conducted within the law.

Speaking during an interview with a local TV station on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, Sossion said the central concern for many Kenyans was whether Parliament followed the Constitution and due process when removing Gachagua from office.

“Kenyans were waiting to know whether this impeachment was done in a legal and constitutional manner. It was evident that due process was followed,” Sossion said.

According to the former KNUT boss, public debate surrounding the impeachment had largely focused on claims by Gachagua’s legal team that the process was flawed and failed to meet constitutional standards.

However, Sossion argued that the High Court’s findings demonstrated that the impeachment met the legal threshold required under the Constitution.

“What is important is the process. There have been contestations by Rigathi’s team that the process was not proper, and I think Kenyans were waiting. In terms of analyzing the whole process, due diligence was followed,” he added.

Sossion emphasized that impeachment proceedings should never be guided by emotions, political affiliations, or public pressure. Instead, he said, such processes must be anchored in the Constitution and governed by established legal procedures.

He noted that while allegations of misconduct may trigger calls for impeachment, the ultimate decision must always be based on constitutional principles, fairness, and accountability.

The former teachers’ union leader further argued that strong institutions depend on adherence to legal frameworks regardless of the individuals involved, warning against attempts to personalize constitutional processes.

His remarks come as debate continues over the implications of the High Court judgement delivered on June 8, 2026. The court upheld Gachagua’s impeachment but also found that his right to a fair hearing had been violated during Senate proceedings, awarding him KSh50 million in constitutional damages.

The ruling has drawn mixed reactions from political and legal figures. While supporters of the decision view it as a confirmation that constitutional procedures were followed, critics argue that the finding of a rights violation undermines the legitimacy of the impeachment outcome.

Among those critical of the judgement is Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, who described the ruling as a miscarriage of justice and questioned whether the process met the standards of constitutional fairness.

With appeals expected to be filed in the coming weeks, the Court of Appeal is likely to be called upon to provide further guidance on the relationship between due process violations and the validity of impeachment proceedings.
