Speaking on Friday, June 12, 2026, in Kisa East, Kakamega County, during the start of his three-day tour of Western Kenya, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader outlined what he described as the opposition’s pathway to victory in the next presidential contest.
Gachagua said various regions associated with the United Alternative Government had the capacity to collectively deliver enough votes to unseat President Ruto, whom he has increasingly criticised since his impeachment and exit from the Kenya Kwanza administration.
“Back home, I have consolidated seven million votes. In Nairobi, we have consolidated three million votes. We want the Mulembe nation to consolidate five million votes, and then join them with Kalonzo’s three and a half million votes,” Gachagua said.
His remarks come at a time when opposition leaders are under pressure to agree on a single presidential candidate capable of mounting a formidable challenge against Ruto, who is expected to seek a second term in office.
Gachagua recently disclosed that he would retreat to his Wamunyoro residence for 45 days to consult with political allies and opposition principals on the coalition’s strategy, including the selection of a flagbearer for the 2027 elections.
The former Deputy President has consistently maintained that the opposition has sufficient political support to defeat the Kenya Kwanza administration if it remains united.
Since falling out with President Ruto, Gachagua has repeatedly questioned the President’s influence in the Mt Kenya region, arguing that support for the Head of State has significantly declined.
In March this year, while addressing supporters in Kirinyaga County, Gachagua challenged Ruto’s popularity in the region and claimed the President would struggle to secure significant support in Mt Kenya during the next election.
“Nataka nikwaambie William Ruto, mimi Riggy G nikiwa nyumbani hapa Kirinyaga, nikiwa mtoto ya Mau Mau, nakwambia leo mchana, ukipata five per cent ya kura hapa mlimani, Riggy G hapana mwanaume,” he declared.
His latest remarks are expected to further fuel political debate as opposition leaders intensify efforts to build alliances and strengthen their support bases ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The coming months are likely to be crucial as opposition parties negotiate coalition agreements and attempt to present a united front against President Ruto's re-election bid.
