Gachagua Urges Kenyans to Stay Home During Gen Z Commemoration Protests, Alleges Planned Disruption

"Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has appealed to Kenyans to avoid participating in the planned June 26 Gen Z commemoration protests, alleging that state-linked operatives intend to infiltrate demonstrations and cause chaos. He instead called for a nationwide stay-at-home protest."

Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has urged Kenyans to stay away from the streets during the planned Gen Z commemoration protests, claiming there are plans to infiltrate the demonstrations with criminal elements and provoke violence.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, June 24, 2026, the former Deputy President said he felt compelled to address the nation after receiving what he described as intelligence reports suggesting that hired groups would be deployed in parts of the country, particularly within the Mt Kenya region.

Gachagua said recent demonstrations had resulted in loss of life and destruction of property, warning that similar incidents could occur if protesters turn up for the commemorative events.

“I wished to address myself on the planned Gen Z commemoration protests. During the last two demos, lives were lost and businesses were destroyed. To those whose lives have been lost over the last four years, this is not what 55 million Kenyans envisioned,” he said.

The DCP leader took issue with remarks allegedly made by a senior government official regarding the anticipated protests, arguing that they pointed to a broader strategy aimed at targeting specific regions.

“A very notorious CS and warmonger stated that demos would only be witnessed in Mt Kenya. This is not just a statement from nowhere,” Gachagua said.

He went on to make a series of allegations against senior government officials, including Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, and other leaders, claiming they were involved in organising and financing groups intended to disrupt demonstrations.

According to Gachagua, some police officers were uncomfortable with alleged instructions to avoid intervening should unrest occur during the protests.

“Senior police officers have told us they are uncomfortable with instructions that they should keep away and let goons cause chaos in the region,” he claimed.

The former Deputy President further alleged that areas perceived to be strongholds of the DCP had been specifically targeted in an effort to damage the party's reputation and blame its leadership for any disturbances that may arise.

He also criticised recent government responses to reports of criminal groups appearing during demonstrations, insisting that those responsible should be held accountable.

Appealing directly to young Kenyans planning to participate in the Gen Z commemorations, Gachagua urged them to reconsider and instead focus on the 2027 General Election as a constitutional avenue for change.

“I would kindly appeal to the Gen Zs to keep off the streets on Thursday. We need them next year. Retreat is not surrender and it is not cowardice. There is a better way to deal with Ruto constitutionally,” he said.

He argued that preserving lives should take precedence over street demonstrations, warning that participation could expose young people to unnecessary risks.

“Please my sons and daughters, you cannot vote when you are dead,” he added.

Gachagua extended his appeal to business owners, motorists, workers, and parents in Nairobi, Central Kenya, Kajiado, and Narok counties, urging them to remain indoors and keep businesses closed during the day.

Instead of demonstrations, the former Deputy President proposed a nationwide stay-at-home protest, describing it as a safer and more effective method of expressing dissatisfaction with the government.

“I ask all Kenyans on Thursday to stay indoors, stay at home, and avoid the state-sponsored militia. There is no need for you to make a point, then you end up in a casket,” he said.

The remarks come amid heightened political tension ahead of the Gen Z commemoration activities, which are expected to honour victims of previous anti-government protests while renewing calls for accountability, justice, and reforms.

During an interview with Phil Director, political analysts observed that the approaching commemorations have evolved beyond remembrance events into a significant test of the country's political climate, with competing narratives emerging from both government and opposition leaders over how citizens should participate.
