The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has officially unveiled the roadmap for Kenya’s 2027 General Election, confirming that the country will head to the polls on Tuesday, August 10, 2027.
The election date is contained in the Commission’s newly launched Election Operations Plan (EOP) for the 2027 General Election, a comprehensive framework designed to guide the planning, coordination, implementation, and monitoring of all activities leading up to the national vote.
Speaking during the unveiling of the plan on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, IEBC Commissioner Ann Nderitu, who chairs the Election Operations Committee, said the document provides a structured roadmap aimed at ensuring a smooth, transparent, and credible electoral process.
“The Election Operations Plan is a comprehensive framework for the effective conduct of the 2027 General Election. It provides a structured roadmap for planning, coordinating, implementing, and monitoring all activities required for the successful conduct of the election,” Nderitu said.
The roadmap is anchored on the Commission’s Strategic Plan 2024–2029 and is expected to guide preparations across all levels of election management, including voter registration, voter education, candidate nominations, election logistics, polling operations, and results management.
One of the most significant timelines outlined in the plan is the constitutional requirement that any public officer intending to contest in the 2027 General Election must resign from public office at least six months before the election date.
According to the IEBC, the resignation deadline for affected public officers will be Tuesday, February 9, 2027.
The requirement is expected to affect a wide range of public officials, including senior government officers, principal secretaries, county executives, state corporation heads, civil servants, and other public officers who may be considering bids for elective positions in the upcoming polls.
Political analysts believe the announcement will trigger early political realignments as prospective candidates begin weighing their options ahead of the resignation deadline.
The Election Operations Plan also provides a framework for coordination between the IEBC and key stakeholders, including political parties, government agencies, civil society organizations, development partners, security agencies, and voters.
The Commission expressed confidence that the roadmap will enhance preparedness and ensure that all electoral activities are conducted within the constitutional and legal timelines.
With just over a year remaining before the resignation deadline and slightly more than two years until Kenyans return to the ballot, the unveiling of the election roadmap officially signals the start of the country's journey toward the 2027 General Election.
Election experts noted that the publication of the roadmap provides clarity for political players and allows institutions involved in the electoral process to begin preparations early.
As political parties continue positioning themselves for the next electoral cycle, attention is now expected to shift to potential candidates, coalition formations, voter registration plans, and other activities that will shape the race to State House and other elective offices.
