Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has claimed that a number of pro-government Members of Parliament privately support the Linda Mwananchi movement but are unwilling to publicly associate with it for fear of political repercussions.
Speaking during an interview with a local radio station on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, Sifuna, who leads the Linda Mwananchi movement, alleged that many MPs aligned with the Kenya Kwanza administration are sympathetic to the movement's agenda but remain cautious about openly switching allegiance.
According to the senator, many of the legislators are concerned that President William Ruto could withdraw or delay national government-funded development projects in their constituencies if they defect to the opposition.
“Many of them support us privately, but they are afraid to come out because they fear that President William Ruto might withdraw development projects from their constituencies,” Sifuna said.
Despite their concerns, Sifuna claimed that several of the MPs have assured him they intend to join the movement when they believe the political environment is more favourable.
He said the lawmakers have indicated they will publicly embrace Linda Mwananchi once they determine that the timing is right.
The movement, which initially consisted largely of rebel Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders, has in recent months attracted politicians from different political formations, expanding its national profile.
Among its recent high-profile recruits is Murang'a Governor Irungu Kang'ata, who announced his departure from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and declared his support for the Linda Mwananchi movement.
Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo has also joined the movement, announcing plans to seek an elective position in Nairobi County.
Former Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter has likewise thrown his weight behind the outfit, adding to its growing list of supporters.
The movement's expanding membership has attracted the attention of political analysts, including Herman Manyora, who argues that the influx of leaders from diverse political backgrounds is helping Linda Mwananchi evolve into a movement with broader national appeal ahead of the 2027 General Election.
