Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has launched a fresh attack on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of deliberately creating fear and instability in the Mt Kenya region for political and financial gain.
In a statement posted on his official X account on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, Murkomen alleged that Gachagua was orchestrating an atmosphere of fear with the aim of extorting money from prominent businesspeople in the region.
"Listening to Gachagua today has confirmed our worst fears that he is on a mission to create an atmosphere of fear and siege in the Mt. Kenya region with the sole aim of extorting money from leading businesspeople," Murkomen said.
The Interior CS further claimed that businesses belonging to individuals who refuse to comply with the alleged intimidation were being targeted by criminal gangs.
"The businesses of those who refuse to yield to his intimidation and blackmail are targeted for looting and destruction by his gangs and goons," he stated.
Murkomen went on to accuse the former Deputy President of posing a threat to national unity and the country's economy.
"He is the biggest threat to national unity and the economy of our country," he added.
The Cabinet Secretary also warned that security agencies were closely monitoring Gachagua's public statements and alleged activities, saying the government would take all necessary measures to protect lives and property.
"His utterances and criminal activities are closely being monitored by our security agencies and we shall do everything to ensure that the people and their properties are protected," Murkomen said.
The remarks come amid escalating political tensions between the government and the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader, with both sides trading accusations over insecurity and political violence in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
