Former Nyeri Town Member of Parliament (MP) and Jubilee Party National Executive Committee (NEC) member Wambugu Ngunjiri has praised People's Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua for challenging attempts to prematurely endorse Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as the United Opposition's presidential flag bearer.
In a statement shared on his social media pages on Friday, July 10, 2026, Ngunjiri commended Karua for writing to the coalition's principals, cautioning them against settling on a presidential candidate before the opposition formally reconvenes to make a collective decision.
Ngunjiri, who has publicly backed Jubilee deputy party leader Fred Matiang'i for the opposition's presidential ticket, said Karua's intervention demonstrated the need for a transparent and consultative process.
He accused some individuals within the opposition coalition, whom he did not name, of pushing for an early endorsement of Kalonzo before coalition leaders have agreed on the selection process.
The former legislator also appeared to renew his criticism of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, with whom he has had political differences since their fallout in 2025.
Although he did not mention Gachagua by name, Ngunjiri suggested that one of the coalition's principals was among those supporting Kalonzo's bid to become the opposition's presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election.
His remarks come as debate intensifies within the United Opposition over the process of identifying a single presidential flag bearer to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.
