The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has clarified the rules governing assisted voting, reminding Kenyans that voters who require help due to disability, illiteracy or other lawful reasons are entitled to be assisted during the voting process.
In a statement issued on Thursday, July 16, 2026, the electoral commission said such voters may choose a person of their own preference to assist them in casting their ballot.
However, the IEBC stressed that only one assistant is permitted for each voter and that no individual is allowed to assist more than one voter during the election.
The commission further noted that every instance of assisted voting must be officially recorded, while the assistant will be appropriately marked to indicate that they have already assisted a voter, in accordance with the law.
The IEBC said the measures are intended to protect the integrity of the voting process while ensuring that eligible voters who require assistance are able to exercise their constitutional right to vote.
