The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has launched a nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, with a target of registering at least 6.3 million new voters ahead of the 2027 General Election.
According to the Commission, the drive seeks to ensure that all eligible Kenyans, particularly the youth who have attained voting age since the last election, are enlisted in the national voter roll.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Commission urged Kenyans to take advantage of the registration opportunity to ensure they can participate in the upcoming polls.
“Voting begins with registration. We urge all unregistered eligible citizens to visit the nearest registration center and get listed,” the statement read in part.
The exercise will be conducted at all IEBC constituency offices and Huduma Centres countrywide. The Commission has also deployed mobile registration teams to cover remote areas and ensure inclusivity in regions with limited access to registration centers.
IEBC Chairperson (acting) noted that the registration is part of early preparations for the 2027 elections, which also include updating biometric systems, enhancing civic education, and verifying existing voter data.
The Commission further reminded Kenyans who have relocated since the last election that they can transfer their voter details to their current constituencies or wards.
Voter registration has historically been a challenge in Kenya, particularly among youth aged 18 to 35, who make up the majority of unregistered voters. The IEBC hopes that consistent voter education and decentralized access points will improve participation in the coming polls.
The exercise will continue throughout the year, with periodic updates on registration progress to be released by the Commission.
