Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has declared his intention to contest the presidency in 2032, saying he plans to first serve one term as Nairobi governor if elected in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a radio interview on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, Babu said five years would be sufficient to transform Nairobi and build the political support he would need to pursue the presidency.
“I have already told you we have sat as leaders, and I have told them we are all leaders here. Do one term, as I also do one term as governor, then we look for the president. I personally will go for the presidency in 2032,” he said.
Babu expressed confidence in his chances of winning the Nairobi gubernatorial race, dismissing potential competitors and claiming that no aspiring candidate would defeat him in 2027.
“There is no one who can defeat me for the governor’s seat in Nairobi. There is none for 2027. Someone who will defeat me for the governor’s seat in 2027 has not yet been born. Get used to your governor early,” he said.
The Embakasi East MP pointed to his record in Parliament as evidence of his capacity to lead the capital. He claimed that no audit report had implicated him in the theft of public funds during his time as a legislator.
Babu also cited the completion of 88 roads and his role in facilitating the acquisition of school buses for schools in Embakasi East as some of the achievements he believes demonstrate his leadership credentials.
He further claimed that he has been ranked the best-performing sitting MP on more than two occasions, arguing that his parliamentary record gives him the experience required to govern Nairobi.
If successful in his gubernatorial bid, Babu's proposed one-term tenure would position the Nairobi governorship as a stepping stone towards his longer-term presidential ambitions in 2032.
