Laikipia County Woman Representative Jane Kagiri has criticised leaders and residents from the Mt Kenya region amid growing political debate over the region’s position ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during an interview with a local television station on Thursday, August 13, 2026, Kagiri said she had faced pressure from residents and leaders in Nyeri, Murang’a and Kiambu to portray President William Ruto’s administration negatively.
The legislator claimed that she was branded a betrayer whenever she declined to criticise the government.
“Our people from Nyeri, Murang’a and Kiambu, you are telling me to say the government is not good, and if I don’t, you call me a betrayer. You are the biggest betrayers,” Kagiri said.
Kagiri’s remarks come amid intensifying political realignments in the Mt Kenya region as political parties and leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
The region has increasingly become a key battleground, with politicians holding different positions on their relationship with the Ruto administration and the opposition.
Kagiri’s comments highlight the growing divisions within the region, where some leaders continue to support the government while others have increasingly criticised its policies and called for a new political direction.
The debate has also been fuelled by efforts by opposition leaders to expand their influence in Mt Kenya, as the region’s political leadership weighs its options ahead of the next General Election.
