Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has vowed to challenge President William Ruto at the ballot in the 2027 General Election, accusing the President of failing to honour promises made to Kenyans.
Speaking in Naivasha on Friday, August 14, 2026, Gachagua said his fallout with Ruto had significantly altered Kenya's political landscape and insisted that his removal from the deputy presidency would not prevent him from challenging the Head of State politically.
Gachagua warned Ruto that removing him from office had not ended their political rivalry, saying he would mobilise Kenyans to remove the President from power through the ballot in 2027.
The former deputy president also urged Ruto to stop blaming his predecessors for the challenges facing the country and instead concentrate on addressing issues affecting Kenyans.
“Stop the blame games and focus on Kenya’s problems. Uhuru Kenyatta is not your competitor,” Gachagua said.
His remarks come as political parties and emerging movements intensify preparations for the 2027 General Election, with Gachagua positioning his Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) as a major political force seeking to challenge the Kenya Kwanza administration.
The former deputy president has increasingly stepped up his criticism of Ruto during his political tours, accusing the administration of failing to deliver on its campaign commitments and calling for a change of government in 2027.
The growing confrontation between the two former political allies is expected to remain a major feature of Kenya's political landscape as the country moves closer to the next General Election.
