Former Interior Cabinet Secretary and Jubilee Party Deputy Leader Fred Matiang’i has warned government leaders against fuelling ethnic and political tensions as Kenya approaches the 2027 General Election.
Speaking in Narok on Friday, August 14, 2026, during his tour of the region, Matiang’i urged Kenyans to remain united and focus on peace, security and economic activity rather than political confrontation.
The former Interior CS said residents were more concerned about living peacefully and conducting their businesses than engaging in political conflicts.
“Tunataka uchumi wetu uendelee mbele, tuwe na security hapa, kwasababu hii Narok ndio inalisha Kenya. Na tunataka kila mtu apate nafasi ya kufanya biashara hapa,” Matiang’i said.
He urged residents to resist attempts by politicians to divide them along ethnic or political lines, arguing that ordinary Kenyans were capable of living and working together peacefully.
“Mtu yeyote asidhubutu kutugawanya sisi wananchi, kwa sababu nyinyi wananchi hamna shida na mtu. Sisi tunakaa pamoja bila shida,” he said.
Matiang’i's remarks come amid heightened political activity as parties and presidential hopefuls intensify their preparations and mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
The former Interior CS also cautioned unnamed government leaders against what he described as attempts to introduce political tensions into communities that have continued to coexist peacefully.
“Kwa hivyo wale viongozi wa serikali ambao wameanza kupiga war drums, wasituletee sisi. Sisi tunataka amani,” Matiang’i said.
He maintained that Kenya's economic progress and security should remain a priority, urging leaders to avoid rhetoric that could undermine national cohesion as the country heads towards the next election.
