Hassan also announced that he intends to seek a fifth term as Kamukunji MP on the DCP ticket while supporting Gachagua’s presidential bid in the 2027 election.
“We are now in DCP, and we have decided to support Rigathi Gachagua in his 2027 Presidential ambitions,” Hassan said.
Hassan was elected Kamukunji MP for a fourth consecutive term in the 2022 General Election on a Jubilee Party ticket. He first won the seat in August 2011 through a parliamentary by-election, when he contested on a Party of National Unity (PNU) ticket.
Hassan backs Gachagua for 2027
Hassan’s move comes as Gachagua intensifies political mobilisation and consultations with different communities and political leaders as he seeks to strengthen DCP ahead of the 2027 polls.
His decision to back Gachagua also gives the former Deputy President an additional political foothold in Nairobi, where Kamukunji is one of the constituencies with a diverse electorate.
Hassan’s continued bid for the Kamukunji seat under DCP will also test the party’s ability to attract established politicians with existing political networks.
DCP rejects ethnic politics claims
Speaking while receiving new members at DCP headquarters in Nairobi, DCP Secretary-General designate and Nyandarua Senator John Methu dismissed claims that the party was founded along ethnic lines.
Methu pointed to Hassan’s entry as evidence that DCP was open to politicians and supporters from different ethnic communities.
“Ulisema hii chama ni ya wakabila. Huyu Yusuf ni Kamau. Huyu anaitwa Wanjiru. Si tumemkubalisha? Na si tumempokea? Na si ameingia kwa chama yetu? Hii ni chama ya kila mtu Kenya nzima!” Methu said.
He also cited DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala as another example of the party’s diverse leadership.
“Kwani wakati anasema hii chama ni ya ukabila, huyu deputy party leader anaitwa Malala, yeye anaitwa Mwangi? Anaongea Kikuyu? Si anaongea Kiluhya? Na ako kwa chama yetu,” he said.
Methu maintained that Hassan’s entry demonstrated DCP’s efforts to broaden its national appeal and attract leaders from different parts of Kenya.
The development comes as political parties and movements continue to reorganise and strengthen their structures ahead of the 2027 General Election, with DCP seeking to establish itself as a major political force.
