Speaking on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, Gachagua said Kenyans continue to have concerns about whether the electoral commission can operate independently from the administration of President William Ruto.
“Kenyans, you’ll bear witness that I have spoken to the IEBC chairman Mr. Erastus Ethekon,” Gachagua said.
The DCP leader said he had previously raised concerns with Ethekon over the commission’s image and the trust deficit surrounding its work.
“In my capacity as a leader in this country, and as a responsible citizen, on several electoral matters, I have advised him that IEBC has had image and trust issues. And the people of Kenya for a long time know that,” he said.
Gachagua recalls 2007-2008 election crisis
Gachagua also invoked the controversies surrounding the former Electoral Commission of Kenya (ECK) during the 2007 General Election, warning of the consequences that can arise when Kenyans lose confidence in the electoral process.
“I have taken the trouble further and reminded him of the 2007/2008 inactions and actions of the then ECK (Electoral Commission of Kenya) and the resultant chaos and mayhem in the country,” he said.
The disputed 2007 presidential election was followed by widespread post-election violence, making electoral credibility and public trust particularly sensitive issues as Kenya prepares for the 2027 polls.
Gachagua warned that the country cannot afford a repeat of the mistrust, tension and instability associated with disputed elections.
Gachagua questions Ethekon’s appointment
The former Deputy President also raised questions about public perceptions surrounding Ethekon’s appointment and allegations of political allegiance.
He urged the IEBC leadership to demonstrate independence and reassure Kenyans that the commission would conduct the 2027 election fairly and transparently.
His remarks come as political parties and presidential hopefuls intensify scrutiny of the IEBC’s preparations for the 2027 General Election, including the procurement of election technology and measures aimed at protecting the credibility of the electoral process.
