Siaya Governor James Orengo has defended his decision to pursue the Linda Mwananchi presidential ticket, dismissing claims that his ambition is intended to undermine Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna or weaken the opposition coalition.
Orengo said on August 31, 2026, that his decision to declare interest in the 2027 presidential race was legitimate and should be viewed as part of a democratic process within the political movement.
The governor maintained that Linda Mwananchi should allow interested leaders to compete for the presidential ticket before settling on a single candidate. He argued that allowing multiple aspirants to express their ambitions would not necessarily undermine the coalition’s unity.
Orengo pointed to the 2007 political experience within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), when five senior politicians belonging to the Pentagon sought the party’s presidential ticket.
He said he remains committed to the coalition eventually presenting one presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election, but insisted that the process of selecting that candidate must be transparent and democratic.
“I’m not spoiling it because I’m committed to the fact that we must have one presidential candidate. So those who raise these fears are not Democrats. And I can tell you if you don’t allow a process of internal democracy, then the case becomes very difficult to achieve unity,” Orengo explained.
His remarks come amid growing attention around the political ambitions of Sifuna, who has emerged as one of the most prominent figures associated with Linda Mwananchi.
Orengo’s declaration therefore introduces another senior politician into the emerging contest for the movement’s presidential ticket, with the process of selecting a flagbearer likely to become an increasingly important issue as the 2027 elections approach.
Orengo Reveals Limuru Disagreement
Orengo also disclosed that his position on the presidential ticket generated disagreement during a recent Linda Mwananchi retreat held in Limuru, Kiambu County.
According to the governor, the question of who should become the coalition’s presidential candidate was included in the retreat’s agenda. However, he objected to the discussion, arguing that the issue required additional consultations before being formally considered.
“The issue of the presidential candidate was brought as an agenda and I said it was inappropriate at that time that it needed more consultation and some people are unhappy about that,” the governor stated.
Orengo maintained that the coalition should first undertake wider consultations before determining its presidential candidate, arguing that rushing the process could create unnecessary divisions among its members.
His position sets the stage for potentially intense discussions within Linda Mwananchi as different leaders seek to establish their influence and position themselves for the 2027 presidential contest.
While Orengo has reaffirmed his commitment to a single opposition candidate, his insistence on an open selection process means the question of the eventual flagbearer is likely to remain a major issue within the movement.
