The meeting, held at the British envoy’s official residence in Nairobi, provided an opportunity for the two leaders to exchange views on national and international issues, including the preparedness of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and what Kalonzo described as rising political intolerance in the country.
In a statement posted on X, Kalonzo said the discussions centred on matters of national and international concern, including the IEBC’s readiness for the 2027 polls and the growing levels of political intolerance.
He stressed the importance of having an electoral commission that is adequately prepared to conduct a credible election.
“I underscored that a credible and fully prepared IEBC is indispensable for the legitimacy of our democracy and that dissent must never be criminalized nor mistaken for enmity,” Kalonzo said.
Kalonzo was accompanied by National Assembly Minority Leader and Kathiani MP Robert Mbui.
Wiper Reaffirms Commitment to Peaceful Elections
Kalonzo said the Wiper Patriotic Front remained committed to non-violence and to ensuring that the 2027 General Election is free, fair and credible.
“We reaffirmed our unwavering commitment on behalf of the Wiper Patriotic Front, to non-violence and to free, fair, and credible elections,” he said.
The Wiper leader also expressed gratitude to High Commissioner Baugh for the United Kingdom’s continued engagement with Kenya’s democratic process.
Kalonzo said Kenya’s international partners, just like Kenyan citizens, expect the country to maintain a peaceful and credible path towards the 2027 General Election.
“I expressed my gratitude to High Commissioner Baugh for his sustained engagement with Kenya’s democratic process and reaffirmed that Kenya’s international partners like her wananchi, expects a peaceful and credible path towards the forthcoming General Election,” he said.
The meeting comes as political parties and leaders intensify preparations for the 2027 polls, with electoral preparedness, political tolerance and the credibility of institutions emerging as key issues in the run-up to the election.
