The Judiciary has intensified preparations for Kenya’s 2027 General Election as it seeks to enhance the country’s capacity to resolve electoral disputes and offences.
Speaking at a High-Level Roundtable Consultative Meeting on Election Security, Vice Chairperson of the Judiciary Committee on Elections (JCE), Justice Daniel Musinga, said the institution had already rolled out a comprehensive programme to prepare judicial officers and staff for the upcoming electoral cycle.
Focus on Training and Capacity Building
Justice Musinga said the Judiciary’s preparations were being coordinated through the JCE, with training and continuous capacity building forming a major component of the programme.
The initiative will target judges, judicial officers and Judiciary staff who are expected to participate in handling electoral justice matters, ensuring they are adequately prepared to deal with election disputes and offences.
The training is expected to strengthen the institution’s ability to manage election-related cases efficiently as political activity increases ahead of the 2027 polls.
Special Magistrates to Handle Election Matters
The Judiciary is also working towards the appointment and gazettement of Special Magistrates who will be tasked with handling election-related matters.
According to a statement issued by the JCE on Thursday, September 3, 2026, the committee is engaging the Office of the Chief Justice on the appointment and gazettement of the magistrates as provided for under Section 23 of the Election Offences Act.
The planned appointments are intended to expand the Judiciary’s capacity to deal with election offences and disputes during the electoral period.
Courts Key to Electoral Justice
The preparations come as the Judiciary continues to play a central role in resolving electoral disputes and upholding confidence in Kenya’s electoral process.
By strengthening judicial capacity before the election, the Judiciary is seeking to ensure that cases arising from the 2027 polls can be handled effectively and within the relevant legal framework.
