Senate Deputy Minority Leader Dan Maanzo Wambua has raised concerns over the prolonged delay by opposition leaders to formally identify their preferred presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a meet-the-people tour of Katse and Kyuso towns in Mwingi North, Wambua said the uncertainty was creating unease among Kenyans and weakening the opposition’s political momentum.
He warned that opposition leaders should not repeat the mistakes that contributed to their defeat in the 2022 presidential election.
Kalonzo Touted as Strongest Candidate
Wambua argued that Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka stands above other potential opposition contenders and should be presented as the candidate to challenge President William Ruto.
According to the senator, Kalonzo’s political experience and credentials make him the most suitable figure to lead a united opposition into the 2027 contest.
He described the continued delay in making the decision as unnecessary, arguing that opposition leaders and their political strengths are already well known.
Delay Could Weaken Opposition Momentum
Wambua said the prolonged uncertainty was increasingly frustrating Kenyans who are waiting for clarity on the opposition’s political direction.
He maintained that a timely declaration would help consolidate the opposition and provide voters with a clearer alternative ahead of the 2027 elections.
Wambua Declares Support for Kalonzo
The senator also made clear that his personal preference remains firmly with Kalonzo, saying he would not support another presidential candidate.
Wambua argued that the 2027 election presents Kalonzo with an opportunity to finally lead the country and called for opposition leaders to make the decision on their presidential standard-bearer without further delay.
