The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) has stepped up its political mobilisation in Kajiado County shortly after President William Ruto completed a three-day tour of the region, signalling an increasingly competitive political contest ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The party’s activities are being spearheaded by Kajiado Senator John Seki, a close ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Seki stood with Gachagua during his impeachment proceedings and is now positioning himself to contest the Kajiado gubernatorial seat.
The renewed DCP activity comes as Kajiado emerges as an important political battleground, with Gachagua’s party seeking to strengthen its presence and challenge established political bases in the county.
DCP Attracts County Leaders
DCP has recently strengthened its position in Kajiado following the defection of 10 Members of County Assembly from different political parties, including the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
The MCAs pledged their support for DCP after visiting Gachagua at his Wamunyoro residence, where the former Deputy President has been engaging political leaders and working to build a support network ahead of the 2027 elections.
Gachagua welcomed the defections, declaring that the party was nearing what he described as “100% DCP in Kajiado.” He also said the MCAs represented the views of residents on the ground, arguing that their decision demonstrated growing support for the party.
Gachagua Targets Maa Region
The former Deputy President has indicated that he intends to increase his political presence in Maa-speaking areas as he seeks to broaden his support base ahead of the next General Election.
Gachagua has also pointed to the sizeable Kikuyu population living in Kajiado as another factor that could make the county strategically important to his political ambitions.
He has urged candidates seeking elective positions in Kajiado to support DCP, promising to reciprocate by backing their political ambitions. A similar appeal has been directed at aspirants in neighbouring Narok County, particularly those targeting positions in Narok North and Narok East.
Gachagua Seeks to Counter Ruto Tours
Gachagua has increasingly adopted a political strategy of visiting regions shortly after President Ruto concludes official and political tours there.
The former Deputy President has framed the approach as an effort to challenge what he considers government propaganda while maintaining his influence in areas that have traditionally been associated with Ruto's political support.
With Gachagua currently undertaking a tour of the United States, his allies have taken greater responsibility for sustaining DCP activities at home. DCP designated Secretary-General John Methu is among those overseeing grassroots mobilisation and party programmes as the former Deputy President prepares to return.
The developments in Kajiado underscore the growing competition among political formations seeking to consolidate support ahead of the 2027 General Election.
