Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has told opposition leaders to abandon their ambitions of taking over State House in 2027, saying the Kenya Kwanza administration is confident of securing victory in the next presidential election.
Speaking on Friday, September 11, 2026, at Kanyakine Market in South Imenti Constituency, Meru County, Kindiki urged voters in Mt Kenya East to remain behind President William Ruto, arguing that the government’s development record would give it an advantage at the ballot.
Kindiki framed the 2027 election as a choice between leaders focused on development and those he accused of seeking to return Kenya to what he described as an era of underdevelopment, tribalism, impunity and political violence.
“The contest next year will be between those who are moving Kenya from third world to first-class world against those who want Kenya to move back to impunity, underdevelopment, tribalism, division and violence,” Kindiki said.
DP defends Kenya Kwanza record
The Deputy President said voters were primarily interested in leaders capable of improving the economy and delivering essential services in sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure and education.
He asked Kenyans to give Ruto another term, arguing that the administration had made progress despite the economic difficulties it inherited when it took office.
“We have built this country from a struggling economy to where we are today in a very short time. We are urging you to re-elect President Ruto for a second term,” he said.
Kindiki urged residents to assess the government based on projects being implemented across the country, citing the ongoing Kionyo-Kanyakine-Mitunguu road as one of the developments in the region.
He also defended delays affecting some projects, saying development takes time and that residents should consider the broader progress being made by the administration.
Kindiki highlights Meru projects
Kindiki pointed to several infrastructure and development projects in Meru County as evidence of the government's investment in the region.
Among the projects he cited was the Ksh7 billion Nithi Bridge project, whose construction, he said, was awaiting compensation for affected landowners.
He also mentioned the Kieni Kwa Dege-Moroga-Maara-Kithenu road and other road projects being implemented across the county.
According to Kindiki, Ksh3.7 billion had been allocated to upgrade 17 kilometres of roads in Meru town, while 21 modern markets were planned or under development.
The Deputy President further said Ksh2.3 billion had been allocated to connect 27,000 households to water, while Ksh39 billion had been set aside for various road projects in Meru County.
Development to shape 2027 contest
Kindiki challenged residents to consider the government's development record when deciding which leaders to support in the 2027 elections.
His remarks come as political parties and opposition alliances intensify their preparations for the next general election, with several leaders positioning themselves for the presidential contest.
The Deputy President maintained that the projects being implemented by the Kenya Kwanza administration would form an important part of the government's case for re-election as it seeks to retain support in Mt Kenya East and other parts of the country.
