Speaking during an interview with Meru FM on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, Nyoro said he decided to reveal his association with PPK after monitoring the political landscape and what he described as misrepresentation of the party’s history and ownership.
Nyoro described PPK as one of Kenya’s oldest political parties, claiming it was established in 1996 and predates many of the parties currently active in the country.
“Another thing is this is not a new party we started. In fact, this party is older than the one I just left, the UDA party. And this one is older than nearly all parties we have here in Mt Kenya because this party was started in 1996,” Nyoro said.
The Kiharu lawmaker also urged newer political parties, including the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), to regard PPK as their “grandfather” because of its claimed history.
Nyoro explains PPK’s roots
Nyoro traced the origins of PPK to a man he identified as Harun Waweru, saying the party existed long before he became its leader.
He explained that the political vehicle came under his camp in 2024 after changes were made to its leadership and structure.
“It was started by someone called Harun Waweru, and his son works in the bank here in this constituency. This party, I became party leader, or rather this party came on our side to become ours in 2024,” Nyoro said.
According to Nyoro, the changes were effected in December 2024 under the leadership of then-party chairman Jacob Gitau.
“Changes were made in December 2024, and the person who made the changes is Jacob Gitau, who was chairman then,” he said.
Nyoro said Gitau remains in Kenya and is currently involved in another political formation, claiming that he serves among the leaders of the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), associated with former Justice Minister Martha Karua.
“He is still in Kenya, and he works as one of the leaders of the PLP party, the one led by Martha Karua,” Nyoro said.
He also named John Kihiko, the former PPK secretary-general, as another official involved in handing over the political outfit to his camp.
“Another person who handed over the party to us is John Kihiko, who was the secretary-general,” Nyoro said.
Nyoro’s account comes as he increasingly positions PPK as his political vehicle ahead of the 2027 General Election following his departure from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
His disclosure also places renewed focus on the history and ownership of political parties as politicians continue to reorganise and secure vehicles ahead of the 2027 polls.
