Wambugu made the endorsement on Thursday, September 17, 2026, in a statement shared on Facebook, as Jubilee Party prepares for a leadership transition following Uhuru’s decision to relinquish the position.
Kioni has already expressed interest in succeeding Uhuru and said he would seek the party leadership through Jubilee’s established constitutional processes.
“I hereby throw my weight behind and endorse Jeremiah Kioni for the position of Jubilee Party Leader,” Wambugu said.
The former MP described Kioni as an experienced politician whose leadership could be useful to Jubilee as the party navigates the transition.
Why Wambugu backs Kioni
Wambugu said Kioni had demonstrated an ability to engage and work with people from different communities, arguing that the experience could help strengthen unity within Jubilee and broaden its national appeal.
“Jeremiah Kioni is an experienced politician and, at a time when the party needs experienced leadership at the forefront, his experience is an important asset,” Wambugu said.
He also cited Kioni’s accessibility and approachability as qualities he considers important for the party’s leadership.
According to Wambugu, a leader who listens, engages and accommodates different views can help attract more members to the party.
The former MP further said Kioni understands the importance of working with party members, political aspirants and grassroots structures.
“With strong coordination and teamwork, I believe he can help position the Jubilee Party to compete effectively for seats in both the National Assembly and County Assemblies across the country,” he said.
The endorsement comes as Jubilee prepares for a leadership transition, with the process of determining Uhuru’s successor expected to take place within the party’s constitutional framework.
