The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition has unanimously adopted a new identity, rebranding as the Ukombozi Alliance as opposition leaders seek to strengthen their political cooperation ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The new alliance will operate under the slogan “One Term, One Team, One Coalition” and will use blue and white as its official colours.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has been positioned as the head of the alliance, while former President Uhuru Kenyatta will retain his role as chairman of the coalition council.
The rebranding signals a fresh attempt by the opposition to reorganise its political machinery and present a united front ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
Kalonzo takes leadership role
Kalonzo's elevation to the helm of the Ukombozi Alliance places him at the centre of the coalition's efforts to coordinate opposition parties and build a common political platform.
The alliance has also signalled its intention to pursue a transfer of power in the next election, with its leadership expected to embark on consultations aimed at broadening the coalition.
As part of those efforts, the alliance is expected to begin consultations with Jubilee leaders from Tuesday as it seeks to bring additional political players into the new formation.
The move comes amid wider discussions among opposition leaders over how to settle on a joint presidential candidate and avoid the divisions that contributed to previous electoral setbacks.
Fresh opposition unity push
Supporters of the rebranding view the Ukombozi Alliance as an opportunity to give the opposition a fresh political identity and create a more coordinated campaign ahead of the 2027 polls.
However, the development comes against a complicated political backdrop, with parallel efforts to build unity taking place within the Linda Mwananchi movement and other opposition formations.
The emergence of the Ukombozi Alliance is therefore likely to intensify discussions about whether Kenya's opposition can eventually settle on one broad coalition or whether competing alliances will enter the 2027 race separately.
There have also been discussions over the similarity of the new name to other political groups, potentially creating confusion as the alliance begins establishing its identity among voters.
For Kalonzo and his allies, the immediate challenge will be turning the rebranding into a functioning political coalition capable of coordinating parties, resolving internal differences and presenting a credible alternative to President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
