Oburu Oginga Demands Answers From Uhuru Over 2022 Election Claims

"ODM Party Leader Oburu Oginga has demanded answers from former President Uhuru Kenyatta following his remarks that the late ODM leader Raila Odinga won the 2022 presidential election."

In a statement on Thursday, September 24, 2026, Oburu said Uhuru’s comments appeared to confirm what ODM had maintained following the disputed election.

He said the party had previously chosen to move on after exhausting the constitutional avenues available to challenge the outcome, in the interest of national stability and moving the country forward.

However, Oburu questioned why Uhuru had chosen to revive the issue four years later instead of addressing the alleged electoral injustice at the time.

“Now that President Kenyatta has chosen to exhume the deeply painful question of the 2022 election, he owes Kenyans some answers,” Oburu said.

He asked why the revelation had become important years after the election and why it was not raised when the alleged electoral irregularities occurred.

“First, why is this revelation important now, four years later, and not when the said electoral injustice occurred?” he posed.

Oburu questions Uhuru’s role in 2022 transition

Oburu also questioned why Uhuru’s administration facilitated the transfer of power to President William Ruto if the former President believed that Raila had actually won the election.

“Second, if he was convinced that Raila Odinga had won, why did his government facilitate the transfer of the instruments of power to a person he believed had not won?” Oburu asked.

He further questioned what Uhuru expected Kenyans to do with the information at this stage.

“What exactly does President Kenyatta expect the Kenyan people to do with this information today?” he said.

Oburu said Uhuru’s remarks had reopened painful memories within ODM and among millions of Kenyans who supported Raila’s presidential bid.

“Elections concern the sovereign will of the people and the legitimacy of government. President Kenyatta must understand that his statement touches a raw nerve within ODM and among millions of Kenyans who stood with Raila Odinga,” he said.

Oburu recalls ODM’s sacrifices after Handshake

The ODM leader also recalled the political compromises the party made during its relationship with Uhuru following the 2018 Handshake between Uhuru and Raila.

Oburu said ODM had lowered its political ambitions in the interest of national unity and stability, despite its political strength at the time.

He maintained that the party did not demand Cabinet or administrative positions in Uhuru’s government despite the political influence it commanded.

Oburu said ODM made further concessions ahead of the 2022 General Election, including giving up its pursuit of key elective positions such as the Nairobi gubernatorial seat.

According to Oburu, the party made those compromises in good faith, believing they were necessary to strengthen Raila’s presidential candidature and the broader coalition project.

His remarks come as the 2027 political contest begins to take shape, with Uhuru’s comments adding a new dimension to the debate surrounding the 2022 election and the political alliances that preceded it.
