President William Samoei Ruto was honoured as a Luo elder today during the 5th Piny Luo Festival at Senye Beach, Migori County, in a move that highlights his push for national unity through cultural engagement.
The festival, which featured boat riding, wrestling, pot racing, and swimming, drew large crowds celebrating Luo heritage. Later, at the Thimlich Ohinga Historic Site, Ruto was crowned alongside ODM leader Oburu Odinga, symbolising cross-community collaboration.
Speaking at the event, Ruto emphasised the role of culture in fostering unity. “Preserving our rich and diverse cultural heritage is the foundation of unity. Culture brings people together, strengthens community bonds, and from this shared identity builds a united nation anchored in diversity and mutual respect,” he said.
The leaders also pledged to support the development of a cultural centre at Thimlich Ohinga to safeguard history, boost tourism, and pass the heritage to future generations, reinforcing Ruto’s message of moving politics away from tribalism and division.
