National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed has asserted that any future pre-election pacts between the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) must be formally agreed upon and properly documented.

Speaking on Sunday, December 21, 2025, Junet emphasized that ODM, as a major national party, must clearly spell out its demands before committing to any political alliance. He noted that informal arrangements are no longer viable, especially as Kenya approaches another electoral cycle.

“As the ODM, we are a national party, and we will lay out our demands prior to any deals. If the Kenya Kwanza government wants us to enter an agreement on the future alliance, we must have a discussion,” Junet said.

The Minority Leader expressed confidence that the government would honor the party’s current demands but warned against entering coalitions without clarity and formal commitments. According to Junet, such agreements must protect ODM’s interests and reflect its influence in national politics.

“We are confident the government will fulfill our current demands, but we cannot afford to enter a coalition without formally stating our demands as we head into the electoral year,” he added.

Junet also took aim at critics both within and outside ODM who, he said, have been presuming to speak on behalf of the party. He criticized those calling for ODM to stop making demands on the government, arguing that such positions undermine the party’s autonomy and negotiating power.

He reiterated that ODM’s engagement with any political formation must be based on mutual respect, transparency, and accountability, stressing that the party will not be coerced into agreements that do not serve its supporters.

The remarks come amid ongoing debate about ODM’s relationship with the Kenya Kwanza administration and the shape of future political alliances. Junet’s statement signals a firmer stance by the party as it positions itself ahead of upcoming elections, insisting that any cooperation must be guided by clear, written, and enforceable terms.
