Embu Senator Alexander Mundigi has taken a defiant stance against moves by the Democratic Party (DP) to expel him following his active support for United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Leonard Wa Muthende in the recently concluded Mbeere North Constituency by-election.
The senator confirmed that he was formally notified of the impending expulsion about a week ago while on official duty in Uganda. If successful, the move could pave the way for a senatorial by-election in Embu County, significantly raising the political stakes.
However, Mundigi appeared unfazed by the threat, dismissing the expulsion bid as politically misguided and lacking merit. He maintained that his actions during the by-election did not amount to misconduct and should not be used as grounds for disciplinary action.
“I have committed no offence,” Mundigi said, insisting that supporting a candidate allied to the ruling coalition does not violate party principles.
The Embu senator further argued that the Democratic Party remains a constituent member of the Kenya Kwanza coalition, noting that no formal decision has been made for DP to exit the ruling alliance. According to Mundigi, his support for a UDA candidate was consistent with the spirit of coalition politics and cooperation among allied parties.
He accused his critics of attempting to weaponise party discipline for political purposes, warning that such actions risk destabilising both the party and the broader coalition.
Mundigi also signalled that he is prepared to challenge the expulsion through all available legal and political channels, insisting that due process must be followed. He said any attempt to remove him from office would face stiff resistance.
The unfolding dispute highlights growing tensions within coalition parties as internal differences spill into the public arena. As the matter escalates, it could test the unity of the Kenya Kwanza alliance and set a precedent on how coalition partners manage internal dissent ahead of future electoral contests.
