Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa has accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of pursuing selfish political interests under the guise of opposition unity, claiming his recent support for Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka is a calculated move aimed at the 2032 presidential elections.
In a strongly worded statement shared on his X page on Monday, December 22, 2025, Barasa dismissed the possibility of the opposition unseating President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election. According to the legislator, Gachagua is fully aware that Kalonzo Musyoka stands little chance against President Ruto, and his support is therefore not rooted in genuine belief in an opposition victory.
Barasa alleged that Gachagua’s political calculus is centered on long-term ambition rather than the immediate electoral contest. He claimed the former deputy president is seeking to ingratiate himself with the Kamba community by publicly backing Kalonzo, with the expectation that such solidarity will translate into political goodwill and votes in a future presidential bid.
“Gachagua is secretly scheming to capture the Kamba vote specifically for a 2032 presidential run,” Barasa stated, adding that the former deputy president understands President Ruto will comfortably defeat Kalonzo in 2027. He argued that the current opposition alignment is more symbolic than strategic, designed to send political signals rather than deliver electoral victory.
The Kimilili MP further suggested that Gachagua’s actions reflect growing political realignments ahead of the next two election cycles, with key players already positioning themselves for life after 2027. He maintained that President Ruto’s political base remains intact and formidable, making any opposition challenge an uphill task.
Barasa’s remarks add to the escalating political rhetoric as leaders across the divide trade accusations over hidden ambitions and future succession plans. As the 2027 elections draw closer, debates over loyalty, strategy, and long-term power plays are expected to intensify, exposing the underlying calculations shaping Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
