Osotsi Warns Ruto: Raila Odinga’s Support in Strongholds Is Not Automatic or Transferable

"Vihiga Senator Geoffrey Osotsi has cautioned President William Ruto against assuming that the political support once enjoyed by the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga can be easily inherited. Osotsi stressed that regions traditionally loyal to ODM Western, Nyanza, and the Coast will only back leaders who deliberately engage, respect, and earn the trust of the people."

Osotsi Warns Ruto: Raila Odinga’s Support in Strongholds Is Not Automatic or Transferable

Vihiga Senator Geoffrey Osotsi has delivered a firm political message to President William Ruto, warning that the immense support once commanded by the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in his traditional strongholds cannot be transferred by default.

Speaking in Vihiga on Sunday, December 21, 2025, Osotsi said that political loyalty in regions such as Western Kenya, Nyanza, and the Coast is earned, not inherited. He emphasized that these regions will not automatically realign themselves with President Ruto simply because Raila Odinga is no longer alive.

The senator noted that Raila’s influence across the three regions was built over decades of political engagement, personal sacrifice, and consistent advocacy for issues affecting ordinary citizens. According to Osotsi, it is unrealistic for any leader to expect the same level of backing without demonstrating similar commitment and understanding of local concerns.

Osotsi further pointed out that voters in the former ODM strongholds are politically conscious and independent-minded, capable of making choices based on leadership credibility rather than historical alliances. He argued that any attempt to assume their support without meaningful engagement would be a strategic miscalculation.

The Vihiga senator also urged President Ruto and other national leaders to recognize that the post-Raila political landscape requires fresh dialogue and respect for regional priorities. He maintained that development promises alone are insufficient without trust, inclusivity, and genuine political goodwill.

Osotsi’s remarks come amid growing debate over the future of ODM strongholds following Raila Odinga’s death, with several political camps positioning themselves to court the influential voting blocs. As the 2027 General Election approaches, competition for support in Western, Nyanza, and the Coast is expected to intensify, with leaders under pressure to prove they can connect with voters beyond party history.
