The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is heading to Mombasa this week for its 20th anniversary celebrations — a moment of reflection, nostalgia, and tribute to its founding leader, Raila Odinga.
The three-day event, set for November 14 to 16, is expected to draw thousands of supporters, party officials, and political leaders from across the country. ODM has urged its members to book the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) for a joint trip from Nairobi on November 13, a move aimed at creating a unified show of presence in the coastal city.
“Let’s SGR together to celebrate Baba in Mombasa,” reads a notice by ODM’s communications director Philip Etale, urging early booking before the tickets run out. The call has sparked excitement among Raila loyalists, many of whom view the journey as more than just a trip — but a chance to pay homage to the man they call Baba.
Acting party leader Oburu Odinga said the anniversary would be both a celebration and a moment of reflection. “As we commemorate this landmark, we do so in honour of the indelible legacy of the Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga — whose vision, courage and sacrifice built this movement,” he said.
The celebrations will begin on Thursday, November 13, with a special session of the National Governing Council to review the party’s progress and set its future course. Friday will feature an ODM Disability League Breakfast, parallel summits for women and youth, and a night concert for the younger generation.
Saturday’s main event will take place at Mama Ngina Waterfront, where members will recommit themselves to the party’s founding ideals. Later that evening, ODM will host a Founders’ Dinner at Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort, followed by a Sunday interfaith thanksgiving service.
Originally planned for October, the anniversary was moved to November to allow more time for county delegations to prepare.
