Political shifts within the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) became more evident on Monday, January 26, 2026, as several former allies of ex–Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua attended the party’s National Governing Council (NGC) meeting held at State House and chaired by President William Ruto.
The meeting served as a platform for the leaders, previously aligned with Gachagua and his Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), to reaffirm their departure from his camp and declare renewed loyalty to UDA.
Among the notable figures present was Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba, who had for a long time been viewed as one of Gachagua’s key allies. However, recent political differences between the two have seen their relationship deteriorate, culminating in what observers describe as a clear political divorce.
Speaking after attending the meeting, Wamuchomba signaled a shift in focus from political contests to development and governance, underscoring her renewed alignment with UDA.
“I have decided this year I want to focus on development and work; politics will come later. I am at State House, and I am at the home of UDA,” she said.
The developments point to an ongoing consolidation within UDA as the ruling party positions itself ahead of the 2027 General Election, while Gachagua’s political camp continues to face defections and internal challenges.
