Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has warned leaders within the United Opposition that internal wrangles and lack of cohesion could pave the way for President William Ruto’s re-election in the 2027 General Election.
In a statement shared on his Facebook page on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Gachagua addressed opposition leaders and supporters during the Democratic Party (DP) National Delegates Convention held at Ufungamano House in Nairobi.
Reflecting on Kenya’s political journey, Gachagua emphasized the historical role played by the Democratic Party, its founder former President Mwai Kibaki, and Ufungamano House in advancing democratic reforms.
“In the history of our lived democracy and the transformation of Kenya, the DP Party, its founder, late President Mwai Kibaki, and Ufungamano House count a big contribution to the second and third liberation of our country, Kenya,” Gachagua stated.
He urged opposition leaders to draw lessons from past political transitions, noting that unity has historically been a decisive factor in defeating entrenched power structures.
Gachagua cautioned that failure to build a cohesive and united front would weaken the opposition’s chances, effectively giving President Ruto an advantage in the upcoming polls.
The former Deputy President called for structured dialogue, mutual respect, and a shared vision among opposition leaders, arguing that personal ambitions should not override the collective goal of offering Kenyans a credible alternative in 2027.
His remarks come amid intensified consultations and realignments within the opposition as leaders position themselves ahead of the next general election.
