Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has dismissed the recent political alliance between Democracy for Citizens (DCP) Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala and County Woman Rep Elsie Muhanda, claiming that their efforts to unseat him in the 2027 general elections are futile. During a function held in his county on Thursday, January 29, 2026, Barasa made it clear that he remains confident in his bid for a second term and that no coalition, regardless of size, can threaten his leadership.
Barasa, who is seeking to cement his political position for another term, ridiculed the Malala–Muhanda pact, stating that even if they joined forces with twenty other candidates, it would not pose a significant challenge to his electoral prospects. He boldly declared, “Nataka niambie Cleophas hivi, sitaki drama zake, hata waungane watu ishirini, wembe ni ule ule, nahawa watu nita pitia asubuhi, saa mbili nitakuwa nimemaliza kazi,” translating to, "Let me tell Cleophas this: I don't want his drama. Even if twenty people join hands, the outcome will be the same. I will deal with them early in the morning."
The governor's comments come amidst rising political tensions in Kakamega, with Malala and Muhanda openly expressing their ambitions to challenge Barasa's leadership in the upcoming elections. Muhanda, who has declared her interest in unseating Barasa, and Malala, a prominent opposition figure, have been working on forming alliances to strengthen their chances.
During the event, Barasa also took a swipe at his former political rival, the former Kakamega Senator, who has been openly critical of his administration. He reminded the audience that he had defeated his opponent in the 2022 gubernatorial race and assured residents that history would repeat itself in 2027. “Just as I defeated him in 2022, there will be nothing different in 2027,” he stated confidently.
Barasa’s firm stance underscores his determination to retain his seat amidst mounting opposition. His remarks have further intensified the political rivalry ahead of the upcoming elections, signaling that he is prepared to defend his leadership at all costs.
As the countdown to the 2027 elections begins, political analysts will be closely watching how the rivalry unfolds and whether Barasa's confidence will translate into electoral victory once again. With his unwavering stance, it appears that Kakamega's political landscape will remain highly competitive in the coming months.
