Democratic Action Party–Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has questioned the independence of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) following events surrounding the resignation of its Chief Executive Officer, Marjan Hussein Marjan.
In a statement shared on his X account, Wamalwa expressed concern after it emerged that IEBC officials held a meeting with Head of Public Service Felix Koskei on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, just hours before the commission confirmed Marjan’s departure.
“Is it in order for the Independent IEBC Kenya to be summoned by the Head of Public Service after meeting the Opposition?” Wamalwa posed.
“Were they receiving instructions on Marjan’s replacement, perhaps from a politically correct tribe?” he added.
Wamalwa’s remarks came a day after IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon announced that Marjan had resigned following a mutual agreement to terminate her service.
Marjan Hussein Marjan had served at the commission since 2015 and was appointed CEO in 2022, making her one of the longest-serving senior officials at the electoral body.
The DAP-K leader argued that the timing of the meeting raises serious questions about political interference in the affairs of an institution that is constitutionally mandated to operate independently.
His comments add to growing public debate and scrutiny over the credibility, neutrality, and autonomy of the IEBC, particularly as the country edges closer to preparations for the 2027 General Election.
Calls for transparency in the process of appointing Marjan’s replacement have intensified, with opposition leaders urging that the commission be insulated from executive influence to safeguard public confidence in future elections.
